Remedy has finally announced their sequel to fan favourite Alan Wake, but the new game will be in a different genre to the original.

The hints of a sequel to Alan Wake haven’t exactly been subtle over the last year or so, especially after the release of a remaster of the 2010 original, but now it’s finally been announced and… it’s not quite what you might have been expecting.

Unveiled at The Game Awards on Thursday night, via a typically short and unenlightening trailer, Remedy co-founder Sam Lake was on hand to add a little more information, including the fact that the sequel is a survival horror.

As he points out, although the original did have horror elements it was basically a straight action title, but that’s not what the sequel is going to be.

Unfortunately, there wasn’t much more information than that, with Lake merely promising ‘deep psychological layers’ to the horror – implying something closer to Silent Hill than Resident Evil.

The tagline of the game is ‘This story is a monster. And monsters wear many faces’, which combined with the scary looking monster man in the teaser trailer suggests maybe the main villain is an evil Alan Wake.

That’s only a guess though, as officially the only other thing Lake said is that the game won’t be released until 2023 – with no more information expected until the summer of 2022 (likely a reference to E3).

Alan Wake 2 wasn’t the only Remedy game to be at The Game Awards, since the Finnish developer is also working on the story campaign for first person shooter CrossfireX, which will be released on February 10 for Xbox and PC.

Surprisingly, despite it being their most successful game to date, there’s still no more word on a Control sequel or its promised multiplayer spin-off.

Both were announced back in June, but nothing has ever been shown of them and it’s unclear when they’ll be released.
