The last game only came out in October but there’s already a new Bayonetta due out next spring, although it’s nothing like the others.
If there’s one thing no one was expecting at The Game Awards 2022 it’s a new Bayonetta game, given that Bayonetta 3 only launched in October and it had been eight years since the last one.
Nevertheless, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza And The Lost Demon will be out on March 17 for Nintendo Switch, although it seems to be very different from the other games, as it’s not primarily an action title and instead seems to be more of an action adventure with a fairly tale theme.
We’re only guessing that, though, based on the trailer, which shows Bayonetta when she was just a girl and referred to only as Cereza.
The plot involves her exploring a mysterious forest in order to find her mother, who seems to have been kidnapped by demons.
It’s hard to tell exactly what the gameplay is like but there definitely seems to be a lot of puzzle-solving, as well as the involvement of Cereza’s first demon Cheshire.
It seems vaguely reminiscent of proto-Platinum game Ōkami but exactly how much combat there is, and how it works, remains to be seen.
The director is the previously unknown Abebe Tinari, whose biggest credit so far is working on the design of Star Fox Guard, but the executive producer is Bayonetta 2 producer Atsushi Inaba, with series creator Hideki Kamiya acting as supervising director.
The Game Awards 2022 was a good one for developer PlatinumGames as while Bayonetta 3 wasn’t up for Game of the Year (that went to Elden Ring) it did, deservedly, win best action game.
