Cyberpunk 2077 roadmap shows PS5 and Xbox Series X update delay

One of the founders of CD Projekt has recorded a public apology for Cyberpunk 2077 and admitted the free DLC has been delayed.

The biggest problem for Cyberpunk 2077, and the thing that’s hardest to understand in terms of why CD Projekt released it in the state they did, is that it is going to take a long, long time to fix the game properly on consoles. Not only the game but also CD Projekt’s reputation.

Co-founder Marcin Iwiński has published a new five-minute video apologising for the problems and insisting that, ‘I, and the entire leadership team, are deeply sorry for this and this video is me publicly owning up to this’.

In the video he makes an effort to ensure that the ordinary developers are not blamed for the disaster and insists that, ‘Myself and the board are the final decision makers and it was our call to release the game’.

Iwiński describes some of the events immediately prior to launch but manages to skip over the fact that the company purposefully avoided showing any footage of the game running on base PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles prior to launch.

He discusses why the game was difficult to get running on consoles but that’s not the issue, the issue is them purposefully hiding the poor performance from customers and knowingly releasing a game that was barely playable on the older hardware.

It seems CD Projekt was betting everything on the day zero patch fixing things enough to buy them some time for further updates but that was clearly a huge risk, and one that ultimately blew up in their faces.

Ultimately, the only significant information to come from the video is that the dedicated Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 versions of the game have been pushed back until the second half of this year.

In the meantime, CD Projekt will continue to release a regular stream of patches for the existing versions, with the next one due in around 10 days from now (so sometime around next Saturday).

As a result, the free DLC planned for shortly after launch has also been delayed, with more information promised, ‘in the coming months’.

There’s never been any explanation of what the free DLC is, but it’s assumed to be minor cosmetic items and a small number of new missions, in a similar style to The Witcher 3.
