After claiming that Dying Light 2 can last up to 500 hours, developer Techland has quickly realised that’s not what people want.
Yesterday, Dying Light 2 developer Techland proudly claimed that Dying Light 2 would take 500 hours to ‘fully complete’ and yet today they’re desperately insisting that it only takes around 20 hours to finish the main story.
That’s not a result of them being unable to fulfil on a promise but a reaction to fan complaints that the game was too long and probably full of bloat.
The idea of any game being too long is a relatively modern complaint but whereas previously it would’ve been seen as an unequivocally good thing, many fans have voiced concerns that the game must be dragging itself out in the manner of Assassin’s Creed and Red Dead Redemption.
It’s not even that people necessarily dislike games that are that long, but that they’re worried they simply won’t have time to play through them, which is something Techland has tried to address in their latest, slightly desperate, tweet.
Their revised claim is that while it will take more than 500 hours to see and do everything, even the 80 hour figure is only for completing all the side quests – something few people do in any game.
Instead, you’ll apparently be able to complete the main story in around 20 hours, which is roughly the norm for a modern open world title.
The furore is an interesting example of how attitudes are changing, and proof that many people no longer consider more to always be better.
The question of value for money will always be important but so too is the amount of time you can devote to a game; that and the question of whether a story is the length it is because the narrative justifies it or because the developer is just trying to make the game last as long as possible.
Dying Light 2: Stay Human will launch on February 4 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
