Fan works out how to buy PS3 and PS Vita games from the old PlayStation Store website

A new Firefox extension lets you visit the old PS Store website to buy PS3 and PS Vita games without going through the consoles.

While Sony did end up U-turning on its decision to take down the digital storefronts for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, the original PlayStation Store website is still gone for good. Or so it seemed.

As it turns out, the website technically wasn’t taken down. Sony had just made it inaccessible. So, someone has come up with a way to let you visit it again and even buy and download games from it.

YouTuber Silica has created an extension for FireFox, as well as a video tutorial for how to use it. They clarify that it is not limited to the US store and works for PlayStation Stores in other regions as well.

Once you have downloaded the extension and logged into your PlayStation account, you’ll be able to access your download list and purchase available content. You will need to have the website’s original HTML though, which Silica was able to acquire through the Internet Archive.

The current PlayStation Store website only lets you buy PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 content, meaning you’d otherwise need to download PlayStation 3 and PS Vita games through the consoles themselves.

The one downside is that the extension is only available through FireFox. However, Silica does share in the video description a method for accessing the site through Chromium based browsers, like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Although it does require you to also have a debugging tool called fiddler4.

It should be noted that it is possible to also buy PlayStation Portable content through the website, but that won’t be possible come July 2. The PlayStation 3 and Vita stores may be safe for now, but Sony remains committed to shutting down the PSP store.
