Fans may get another look at Square Enix’s Forspoken this week, as the British actress playing the lead teases new information.
Despite being one of the first games announced for the PlayStation 5, there’s never been much info on Square Enix’s Forspoken. Originally known as Project Athia, the game didn’t even have a proper title until March of this year and all we do know is that it’s an action role-playing game from the Final Fantasy 15 team.
As a PlayStation 5 console exclusive (it’s also coming to PC) there’s a very good chance Forspoken will appear at the PlayStation Showcase this week. And a recent comment from the game’s lead actress may hint further at the possibility.
Ella Balinska (who’s also in the Netflix Resident Evil show) is providing voiceover and motion capture for main character Frey Holland, and she recently posted a couple of photos on Instagram, with the caption ‘Forspoken content pending’, and a link to the Forspoken Instagram account.
While this doesn’t necessarily guarantee that Forspoken will be featured during the showcase, the timing does seem like more than just a coincidence. Plus, Sony said that the showcase will include updates from its first party studios and ‘some of the industry’s most imaginative developers, for games releasing this holiday and beyond,’ confirming that third parties will be in attendance too.
It could also be that the game will feature during the Tokyo Game Show, since that is taking place from September 30 to October 3. Square Enix is among the companies holding a Tokyo Game Show presentation (Sony is completely absent it seems), but it hasn’t said which of its games will be featured.
Forspoken isn’t the only Square Enix PS5 game that has been shrouded in secrecy since its announcement. Final Fantasy 16 was revealed almost a year ago and has received few updates in that time.
Progress on Final Fantasy 16 has apparently been going smoothly. In July, during a Final Fantasy 14 presentation (which is no longer available to watch but was transcribed by Famitsu), producer Naoki Yoshida said the scenario and voice-recording sessions were close to completion.
However, he added that the game will likely need to skip an appearance at the Tokyo Game Show. And if it’s not going to be shown there, then it will probably be absent from the PlayStation showcase as well.
Sony hasn’t explicitly said which games will be part of the showcase, but there are plenty of already announced PlayStation games that could be included, such as the sequel to God Of War.
Forspoken is scheduled to release in 2022 for PlayStation 5 and PC.
