Playdead’s recruitment page teases what kind of game its next project will be and even has some pieces of concept art.
Studio Playdead already confirmed that it was working on its third game last year, with Epic Games handling publishing duties, but they’ve never officially announced anything about it.
However, in what is the fifth time this month new details have been leaked via a job ad, Playdead has offered up the first, brief, description on the untitled third project.
According to the description, it will be a third person science fiction game set in a remote corner of the universe. The listing for Technical Director adds that it will be open world and release on multiple platforms, although it doesn’t specify which ones.
This confirms that the new game is quite the departure from Playdead’s last two games, Limbo and Inside, which were 2D puzzle platformers.
The listings also feature some pieces of concept art, handily compiled on Twitter by analyst MauroNL.
More details about the next game by Playdead (Limbo, Inside) can be gathered from a new job ad. A Technical Director job listing describes it as “a 3rd person, open world, science fiction adventure built for multiple platforms on UE and published by Epic.” Two new artworks:

Playdead may be shifting genres but it appears to be sticking to the dark and moody atmosphere that Limbo and Inside had. Some of the art depicts an astronaut, so perhaps they are the player character.
The lack of any other figures may point to them being on an abandoned planet, though you can probably expect something else to be living there, though probably not anything friendly.
Playdead also makes a point of noting that it will not be enforcing crunch, which is something many other studios have been criticised for recently.
‘Our approach to development does not include crunching towards arbitrary deadlines – instead, we particularly look for talented people who enjoy managing their own schedule and thrive on working within a friendly, collaborative environment.’
It’s likely that the game is still early in development, so maybe don’t expect a release this year. That said, Playdead could feasibly share a teaser trailer of some kind to whet peoples’ appetites.
Have Fun ^_^
