In its first update of 2022, BioWare promises big things for Mass Effect and Dragon Age as it establishes a new work model.
Concrete information on both the new Mass Effect and Dragon Age games (commonly referred to as Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age 4) remains incredibly thin, so fans are eager to see some substantial updates in 2022.
In a blog post on BioWare’s website, general manager Gary McKay continues to tease fans, saying that he has already seen ‘incredible work from both teams.’
He also mentions the most recent Mass Effect poster, saying that it has at least five surprises hidden within it that point to the future of the series. Not that fans needed a reason to pore over it; they did so immediately after the poster was shared online.
As for Dragon Age 4, McKay once again emphasises that it will be a singe-player adventure and that it will be ‘built on choices that matter,’ confirming that it will retain the series’ choice system which can affect the story and how other characters view the player.
Development on both games has been greatly affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which resulted in many game delays as people adjusted to working from home.
McKay acknowledges that the past year has been challenging, but BioWare won’t be forcing employees back into the office – although it will be an option for them.
‘We’ll use what we’ve learned and apply it to a new work model that will ensure flexibility for everyone in the studio,’ says McKay, ‘Our goal is to lean into the things that everyone likes about working from home, while also giving people the opportunity to return to the office with more flexibility.’
McKay ends by saying that he remains committed to rebuilding BioWare’s reputation and earning back the trust of its fans: ‘We want the launch of our games to be seminal moments in the industry. We want each game to earn the kind of reaction we’ve seen with Mass Effect Legendary Edition. We feel that we have the right people, the right creative focus, and the support from EA to deliver on the promise.’
While he obviously doesn’t name any names, he’s no doubt referring to Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem, both of which failed to resonate with audiences, with the latter failing to meet sales targets and its big revamp being cancelled.
