A small team is being formed at Respawn for a new single-player game, but don’t expect it to be Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2.
While it hasn’t been formally announced yet, all signs point to EA and Respawn making a sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. However, it looks like that’s not the only new game Respawn has in the pipeline.
Recently, Respawn’s creative director Mohammad Alavi took to Twitter to advertise several new job openings at the studio, specifically for a new single-player game.
The listings don’t reveal much about the game beyond that, with it still being in the early stages of development and described as ‘a designer’s dream playground with a freedom to innovate made possible by the unique universe it inhabits.’
Respawn also makes a point to stress that employees will not be subjected to any overtime or crunch, bluntly saying ‘We don’t glorify this behaviour.’
As for why these new jobs couldn’t be in reference to Fallen Order 2, Alavi’s Twitter announcement states ‘We’re a small, but ambitious team with a history of dreaming big and making splashes.’
Considering the importance of the Star Wars brand and the amount of work no doubt needed for a sequel to a commercially and critically successful game, there is no way EA is having a small team work on Fallen Order 2.
Plus, work on Fallen Order 2 is bound to have already started by now. It certainly wouldn’t be in the early stages like the job listings say, even if EA has no plans to announce any new Star Wars games until next year.
‘A freedom to innovate made possible by the unique universe it inhabits’ doesn’t sound like Star Wars either, given how much control LucasArts maintains on what can and cannot be included, and how particular they are about getting the finer details accurate to the movies and shows.
Respawn is certainly keeping itself busy. Aside from working on new projects, the studio continues to support its battle royale game Apex Legends. During the recent EA Play Live presentation, it announced a new playable character, Seer, alongside details for the next season of content.
In not so light news, it’s also having to contend with mass hacking and DDOS incidents with Titanfall. The situation there is so bad that disgruntled players began hacking Apex Legends as a form of protest, believing Respawn was deliberately ignoring the problems with Titanfall.
If they were hoping that would encourage a third Titanfall game it doesn’t seem to be this new project, since it’s unlikely a new entry would be single-player only.
