Richard’s Skills

1st – Soul of the Crusaders

Active Skill
Rage Requirement: 1000
Heals some of the slightly wounded units in Richard’s army. Adds a debuff to a maximum of 5 targets in a fan-shaped area. (Debuff effect reduces damage dealt and march speed for 2 seconds.)

Upgrades:
Direct Damage Factor: 600 / 800 / 1000 / 1200 / 1400
Damage Reduction: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%
March Speed Reduction: 5% / 7% / 9% / 12% / 15%

Make sure that you are putting 5 points into this skill before you move on!

This skill has a huge AoE that can hit up to 5 targets at once and apply the debuffs on them for 2 seconds. You will get a lot from the March speed Reduction + Damage Reduction.

Due to the huge Healing Factor, you want to give him Richard the proper talent tree to boost it even further. We will be able to allow Richard to heal up to 4300 Healing Factor every time he casts the first skill by using the talent trees below. Yes, you can bring back 4300 troops immediately. There’s no other skill like this in Rise of Kingdoms

You’re placing a debuff on the enemy that reduces their damage by 30%, this includes all damage coming out from the enemies.

The march speed reduction: Since Infantry is already very slow, you need to slow down the opponents as well so that you can target them easier. This ability makes Richard I become one of the best infantry commanders in the game.

The combination of all three perks of this skill is excellent for an infantry commander. That’s why just this first skill alone makes Richard the best infantry commander in the game. You have to have to get his first skill maxed. His first skill maxed equates him to somebody else at 5-5-2-2. This skill is that good!

Disclaimer: You want to max the first skill of almost all Commanders in the game first before working on the next ones.

2nd – Chivalry

Passive Skill
Increases troop damage reduction and counterattack damage. The effect applies to all garrison troops when this commander is serving as a garrison commander.

Upgrades:
Damage Taken Reduced: 5% / 7% / 9% / 12% / 15%
Counterattack Bonus: 4% / 5% / 6% / 8% / 10%

When you have counter attack damage bonus of 10%, you’ve effectively increased your entire damage by 5% because 50% of your total damage is counter attack damage.

Pretty sweet & great skill!

3rd – The Lionheart

Passive Skill
Increases the attack of infantry units by x% and defence of infantry units by x%.

Upgrades:
Infantry Attack Bonus: 5% / 7% / 9% / 12% / 15%
Infantry Defense Bonus: 5% / 7% / 9% / 12% / 15%

The third skill adds a flat 15% attack and defense bonus to your troops if you are having an Infantry army.

A great skill to boost more damage & more defense, excellent for scaling up the army.

4th – Battle-Hardened

Passive Skill
Increases healing effects received by troops by x% and reduces watchtower damage taken by troops by x%.

Upgrades:
Healing Effect Enhancement: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%
Damage Taken From Watchtowers Reduced By: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30%

This is the other great benefit of using Richard I. Almost everything he’s got synergies together perfectly.

If you can increase the ability for that heal to bring back more troops by 30%, that’s just even better.

On top of that, once we go into the talent builds, we can get even more troops back by enhancing the healing effect.

If you’re using Richard to take down a city, you should be doing a full infantry rally and he is really good for that purpose. Watch towers are seriously powerful, especially once they’re maxed out. You can reduce quite a bit of damage coming out from there when having, so pretty sweet

Expertise – Tyrannical Lion

New Passive Skill

Reduces all damage taken by 5% and increases damage dealt to cavalry units by infantry units by 2%. In addition, every 10 seconds, decreases target march speed by 50% for 5 seconds.

This is the expertise that a lot of people want to unlock just because it’s Richard and this is another passive that just keeps on stacking buffs.

So we’ve already got troop’s damage reduction by 15%. Now we’ve added another 5% reduction to all incoming damage, including skill damage or nuke.

Increasing damage dealt towards Cavalry units is what you always want to have while having a full infantry army. By the time that battle is done, you should be doing significant damage to almost any cavalry group out there.

The march speed decrease by 50% for 5s, that’s huge. As mentioned before, you are so slow (and if you’re Rome, Japan, or France, you’re even slower), you need target march speed reduction, a lot!

In addition, the first skill also has an additional march speed reduction by 15% for 2 seconds so these skills go back-to-back, that’s 7 seconds of reduced march speed in total. It’s incredible!  That’s what makes Richard I one of the best commanders in the game.

Levelling and Skill Up Priorities

  1. Keep at 1 star until the 1st skill is maxed.
  2. Then upgrade him to 2 stars and max his 2nd skill.
  3. If you don’t think you will be able to max his 2nd skill in a reasonable amount of time, take him to 4 stars straight after maxing his 1st skill. Or once you have skilled up his 2nd skill as much as you’ll be able to in a reasonable amount of time.
  4. If you have maxed his 2nd skill and can still upgrade more skills in a reasonable time, upgrade him to 3 stars and start maxing his 3rd skill.
  5. Upgrade him to 4 stars and max out his skills.
  6. Once you hit 4 stars, you can stop levelling Richard if you only plan to use him as a secondary. If he is a primary, continue levelling as far as your purposes require.

Pairings

Tank

Richard ⇄ Charles charles martel
Pure Infantry or Mixed Troops

One of the strongest pairings in the game, but also one of the most overhyped. Great at 1v1s, as well as tanking multiple marches. However, it has very little damage. So it is countered in group fights by enemies ignoring it.

This combo excels at magnifying an advantage over the enemy over long drawn out battles. If you find yourself fighting stronger opponents though, you probably won’t get a taste of that magic you see on YouTube.

joan-of-arcJoan + Richard
Pure Infantry or Mixed Troops

This is the best tanking combo for group fights in my opinion. It is not the tankiest, nor does it have much damage output. But it does a rare thing. It tanks.

In group fights, people tend to ignore tanks when there are juicier targets around like dps and support pairings. By running Joan in the primary position with her support tree, this combo has a high chance of being targeted first. Thereby creating space for your squishier marches.

This tank/support combo will be the new meta once enough people read this guide. #callingit

Richard + Hannibal hannibal barca
Pure Infantry or Mixed Troops

A solid combo with a whole lot of debuffs. Make sure Richard is the primary. If Hannibal is the primary, his active with cancel out the damage reduction in Richard’s active.

Richard ⇄ Caesar julius caesar
Pure Infantry or Mixed Troops

Richard ⇄ Eulji eulji-mundeok
Pure Infantry or Mixed Troops

Richard ⇄ Scipio scipio africanus
Pure Infantry or Mixed Troops

Richard + Boudica
Pure Infantry or Mixed Troops

Richard ⇄ Pelagius
Pure Infantry, Pure Cavalry or Mixed Troops

Semi Support

A semi-support is a cross between a fighting pair and a supporting pair. It has either compromised its fighting ability to bring a debuff/disable/AOE buff into the fight, or it is sacrificing its support potential to bring a bit more damage to the table. This is done through either the commander pairing or the talent tree chosen.

Richard can be paired with just about any commander for a legitimate pairing. Any pairing which doesn’t fall into the tanks above, or the supports below, is more or less a semi-support.

Support

Can be paired legitimately with any other support. This decision should be based on what you have and what your team lacks. You will want the primary in your support combo to have either a support talent path or a skill path. The commanders who run well as support (in no particular order) are: Hannibal, El Cid, Cao Cao, Boudica, Joan, Belisarius, Hermann, Pelagius, Eulji and Cleopatra.

Siege

Richard ⇄ Charles
Infantry/Siege Hybrid

Hannibal + Richard
Infantry/Siege Hybrid or Mixed Troop with Siege

Cancels out the damage reduction in Richard’s first skill, but still quite viable.

Talent Tree Builds

I have yet to look into talent trees in any real depth. So until I do, Legend Rhony has been kind enough to give me permission to use his diagrams.

Best Richard I Talent Tree

Open Field / PvP Attack

open field pvp talent tree richard i
Open Field / Fort/Flag Fights Talent Tree for Richard I

Straightforward & very simple talent build for Richard, but some different tweaks that make it a little different than the ones out there.

I have chosen to not take Elite Soldiers. It is solid that’s it takes so many points to get there and I wouldn’t be able to go get Medicinal SuppliesSpiked Armor and some other crucial perks.

Spiked Armor and Medicinal Supplies
Spiked Armor and Medicinal Supplies

With this build, we can have a full Medicinal Supplies, giving you up to 600 additional healing factor. Now we’re up to 2,000 healing factor and with that 30% healing effect enhancement, it’s even more effective.

In this talent build, I try to enhance the health and tankiness as much as possible on the infantry path.

I have got 2 March Speed Reductions in the skill line then spend the rest on health nodes because If they’re going to get away from you on infantry, there’s just no way around.

The main criteria that I got with all these are gonna be Testudo Formation and Medicinal Supplies on the defense tree and Hold The Line, which is a really good skill, it reduces the opponent’s damage by 20% for two seconds so, that’s huge.

Hold The Line and Testudo Formation

So that’s the talent spec for open-field PvP!

With this build, a maxed-out Richard paired up with Charles this guy will last forever on the battle field.
