Sonic Frontiers missed 30th anniversary so Sega could improve it

Sonic the Hedgehog in Sonic Frontiers trailer

It was announced as a 2022 release, but Sonic Frontiers was originally planned to come out in 2021 for the franchise’s 30th anniversary.

2021 marked the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, a monumental milestone. Yet Sega didn’t release a new game to celebrate the occasion. There was Sonic Colours: Ultimate, but that was a remaster of a game from 2010.

The next major release, Sonic Frontiers, was confirmed to launch in 2022 at The Game Awards 2021, but apparently Sega originally wanted it out for the anniversary last year.

In a recently discovered Q&A session with investors in December, Sega admitted to delaying Sonic Frontiers by a year to ‘further brush up the quality.’

‘Not only for this title, but during the development phase, we have been steadily conducting analysis to improve the quality of the title before release, such as introducing game testing based on external evaluations,’ it said.

Basically, Sega would rather postpone the new game and miss the anniversary than rush it out the door, which can be read as the company learning from past mistakes.

Sonic Colours: Ultimate released in a less than optimal state and was met with criticism for its numerous bugs and glitches. The Nintendo Switch version quickly gained infamy for its poor frame rate and flashing sequences that could potentially cause seizures, although developer Blind Squirrel Games has since patched the game to fix these issues.

It makes sense for Sega to be handling Sonic Frontiers with such care. As it notes in the Q&A, this is the first, mainline entry since 2017’s Sonic Forces. Plus, it will mark another major departure for the series by putting Sonic in an open world environment.

While no gameplay has been shown yet, footage and screenshots of its setting immediately drew comparisons to The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild.

2022 as a whole will be a big year for Sonic fans. Aside from the new game, there will also be the second live action movie, which will feature Tails and Knuckles, as well as the Netflix series Sonic Prime.

Sonic Frontiers releases in 2022 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
