Spider-Man developer Insomniac making melee-based multiplayer game

The studio behind Ratchet & Clank is working on a new multiplayer title, that may be some kind of fighting game.

It was always a surprise that it took until 2019 for Sony to buy developer Insomniac Games, considering almost everything they’ve ever done has been a PlayStation exclusive. Given the success of Spider-Man and the new Ratchet & Clank they’ve already proven a worthwhile purchase, but their next game sounds like a bit of a departure.

Although Insomniac are believed to already be working on Spider-Man 2 they recently sent out a tweet looking to hire people to work on an unnamed new multiplayer project.

The tweet doesn’t offer any clues as to what the game might be but the extended description of the Systems Designer role talks about wanting someone that has, a ‘thorough understanding of melee combat systems, enemy design, and boss design.’

The description makes it sound more like a co-op game than a competitive one, although technically bosses do exist in most fighting games as well.

Although most of Insomniac’s games have tended to be single-player many of them have had multiplayer modes as well, including several Ratchet & Clank titles, Sunset Overdrive, and the Resistance series.

They also made four-player co-op game Fuse for EA in 2013. The game was a critical and commercial flop, but it could be that Insomniac are planning to return to some of the same ideas, although it was a third person shooter rather than brawler.

Whatever’s going on the game will be a PlayStation exclusive and, given Insomniac’s last few games, no doubt a graphical powerhouse.
