Street Fighter 6 shows off even more new characters and pre-order bonuses for June launch

No less than four new characters have been unveiled for Street Fighter 6, alongside official confirmation of the already leaked release date.

You would think Capcom would have something brand new to show at The Game Awards, after it recommended fans tune into the event. Yet all it had was another trailer for Street Fighter 6 and it wasn’t even part of the main show, and was instead relegated to the pre-show.

Granted, said trailer did finally confirm the game’s release date of June 2, but this was something that had leaked ahead of The Game Awards, joining Diablo 4 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in the spoiler club.

The trailer was not without some surprises, though, as it contained gameplay featuring not one, not two, but four more characters: the returning Dee Jay and three entirely new fighters named Manon, Marisa, and JP.

Their identities were already known thanks to the massive roster leak but no one knew how these characters would play or what their fighting styles were like.

Well, except for Dee Jay. Judging by the brief glimpses of gameplay, he doesn’t seem to have changed all that much since his last appearance, barring his new outfit.

As for the other three, Capcom’s website has since been updated to provide a bit more backstory on who they are.

Manon is a French supermodel and practitioner of judo, who seeks self-improvement in the pursuit of beauty. This makes her sound a bit like Street Fighter villain Vega, who also is obsessed with beauty, though she seems much friendlier and doesn’t fight with razor sharp claws.

Marisa is an Italian jewellery designer who claims to be descend from ancient Greek warriors. She has a far more brutal fighting style compared to the graceful Manon, befitting her size and physical strength. Something tells us she’ll be popular with the same fans who loved Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil Village.

JP is perhaps the most intriguing, though. The website doesn’t reveal much about him aside from him being ‘head of an international NGO responsible for many successful investment projects.’

In the gameplay, however, he’s seen wielding purple energy, which looks awfully similar to what series villain M. Bison used. Considering Bison died in Street Fighter 5, could JP be tied to him in some way or even be a new antagonist? That’s something that’ll likely be made clearer once the game is out.

It’s a shame Capcom rushed through all these characters at once, since none of them get enough time to really demonstrate their capabilities. A second closed beta is taking place this month, but none of the newly announced fighters are set to feature in that.

The trailer provided a few more glimpses at the game’s single-player mode too, where you can see the custom player character fighting alongside Ryu and Kimberly. Whether this means there’s a dedicated 2v2 mode or this is just a gimmick for the single-player isn’t clear.

It looks like there’ll be a bunch of different mini-games too, like a Mortal Kombat test your might style karate challenge and another where you need to parry basketballs, which some fans will recognise from Street Fighter 3.

Capcom also confirmed pre-order bonuses for Street Fighter 6, which consist of alternate colours for six of the game’s characters: Chun-Li, Ken, Juri, Dee Jay, Jamie, and Manon.

Street Fighter 6 launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on June 2.
