So when we were young, we all had favorite games that we plugged A LOT of hours into; for me, that was multiple games throughout the Pokemon Franchise! So as I continue to remember and play through my old games; I plan to cover some that were important to me at a young age! So let’s dive in and talk about Pokemon Platinum!
So what is the story of Platinum?
So when the game begins, you the player are watching a news story about Professor Rowan’s return to Sinnoh. Just then, your best friend runs in, and the two head for Route 201 to get a Pokémon from Professor Rowan. However, Rowan sees them and reprimands them for endangering themselves. His assistant (Lucas or Dawn, depending on what gender you decided to go with) comes along, and Rowan lets the player and Barry each choose among a Turtwig, Piplup, or Chimchar. After choosing, Barry, who later becomes the rival for the rest of the game; challenges the player to a battle, having picked the Pokémon with the type advantage over the player’s choice. During the course of the game, there are many conflicts with the evil Team Galactic and its leader, Cyrus. When the power of Dialga and Palkia, summoned by Cyrus, begins to overwhelm Sinnoh, Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf appear and Giratina drags Cyrus down into the Distortion World. So you need to stop this all while trying to become the New Pokemon Champion!
What is the Appeal of Platinum?
So to me, the appeal of this game is one that can be passed from generation to generation of Pokemon fans! I still remember getting this game, and playing it on long car rides and just having the time of my life! I still remember playing in the Pokemon contests with my Empoleon and trying to outdo the NPC’s. I remember the joy I got once I made it to the climax of the game (Not spoiling the game for those who have not played it). It is just radiating a lot of good and positive emotions; that I would love for my kids to experience as well! To this day, it still offers some of the best soundtracks that I have ever heard in a Pokemon game; It will still even trigger flashbacks to when I was playing at a young age!
What is new to Platinum?
So there was a lot added to the game, So I am going to briefly go over different features! The Global Trade System has incorporated an e-mail system that allows players to be notified of completed trades. Notification messages are sent to the player’s e-mail account, which can be viewed through the player’s PC, mobile phone, or Wii system. In non-Japanese versions, however, the system was downgraded to Wii messaging only. Thus, in these versions, notification messages are sent and must be viewed through the Wii’s Message Board. The Sinnoh starters and their evolutions are now allowed in an expanded Amity Square, making a total of 20 Pokémon allowed in the Square. Over local wireless, there is a new feature called Spin Trade where the player and their friends can put their Pokémon Eggs in and randomly swap. Trainers that obtain Eggs that land on the Bonus Area, the spotted ones, get a Berry too.
The Lustrous and Adamant Orbs are no longer found on the Spear Pillar as in Diamond and Pearl, instead, they must be found in a cave somewhere in the snowfields of Mt. Coronet which requires Waterfall (which is kinda a hassle and not at the same time). So when one finishes the Stark Mountain quest, instead of the rival appearing at the Fight Area on weekends, he now appears at the Survival Area in front of the Battleground. During the first battle, the levels of the Pokémon in his party range from 59-65, second battle 69-75, and third and beyond 79-85. In these last battles, he was the Trainer with the highest-leveled Pokémon in all core series games, until Red’s remade team in later remakes called Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver (which I will be getting to eventually) When first visiting the Resort Area, the player receives a Villa. Inside on a table is a catalog that lists items that can be purchased to furnish the house in the same manner as decorating a secret base. The player will be visited (whether you wanted to be or not) by NPCs such as the Sinnoh Gym Leaders, the player’s mother, Professor Rowan, and the rival.
So overall this game was a gateway for people to start the Pokemon franchise back in the day; it was also a fresh breath of air to the veterans that are coming back from Diamond and Pearl. They added a lot of Pokemon into the mix, making the total 493! They made a bunch of cool updates that gave it better gameplay as well! This will be a favorite in my collection of video games for sure; and I believe that it should be in yours as well!
Overall Score: 8.8/10
