Lara Croft is set to return, but with a bobble head and a mobile-only free-to-play game.
The release of Shadow Of The Tomb Raider was only two years ago but somehow it seems a lot longer since the final part of the most recent Tomb Raider trilogy appeared.
The game, and trilogy as a whole, was neither flop nor runaway success, which makes it hard to guess what might follow, although now it’s happened a mobile game as a stop-gap does seem an obvious way to keep the name alive.
Apart from the whole chibi art style it’s a very traditional take on the Tomb Raider mythos, with Lara in her original get-up and both a Tyrannosaurs Rex and a rock monster – not the sort of thing you’d find in the modern games.
The game is free-to-play, which is obviously not promising, but it’s described as an ‘action arcade’ title, so it may still play relatively similarly to the original games.
The only other thing we know for sure is that it’s out next year and being made by Square Enix’s mobile team in London and Canadian developer Emerald City Games, whose last game is something called G.I. Joe: War On Cobra.
Whether you’re excited about the game or not – and, let’s face it, you’re probably not – there is good reason to expect a proper game announcement next year, as that’s the series’ 25th anniversary.
There’s no mention of that in the teaser trailer below but Lara’s birthday is October 25, so there’s plenty of time for something to be revealed before that. Perhaps even at The Game Awards next month.
Have Fun ^_^
