Unlock Sephiroth today in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate by beating him in a boss fight

Final Fantasy 7’s infamous villain is potentially available now in Smash Bros., alongside some new Square Enix-themed Mii costumes.

During his presentation on Sephiroth’s inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, director Masahiro Sakurai has revealed a number of neat surprises concerning his release.

Perhaps the most surprising is that, while the one-winged angel will not officially be available until next week, on December 23, it’s actually possible to unlock him right now.

On the game’s main menu screen you can find something called the Sephiroth Challenge, a limited time event where you must defeat him in a one-on-one fight.

How to unlock Sephiroth early in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Win and you get access to not only Sephiroth, but also his accompanying stage, the Northern Crater – a location from Final Fantasy 7 that served as the setting for the final boss fight.

You still need to have bought either Fighters Pass 2 or the Sephiroth DLC pack to access it though, and the challenge will be removed once Sephiroth becomes publicly available.

Most of the presentation focused on how Sephiroth plays, with his stupidly long sword, Masamune, meaning his attacks have a wide range, but he’s surprisingly light and easy to knock off the stage.

If he finds himself losing a fight, his Winged Form will activate, granting him a boost in power and speed, and giving his Smash Attacks super armour.

Sakurai also revealed that Sephiroth comes with nine more music tracks, which include four wholly new arrangements and a couple from the Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children movie.

A common criticism from fans was that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate lacked music from Final Fantasy 7, with it being represented with only two songs.

Lastly, five more Mii Fighter costumes can be purchased as well. Three of them are based off other Final Fantasy 7 characters, specifically, party members Barret, Tifa, and Aerith.

The Chocobo hat from the last Smash Bros. game has been brought back too and so has the Geno outfit.

Geno, a character from 1996’s SNES role-playing game Super Mario RPG, has been a very popular choice for a new fighter in the Smash Bros. series, so fans are treating this Mii costume as the death knell for any hopes that he’s one of the remaining DLC fighters.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available on Nintendo Switch.

Have Fun ^_^
