Xbox streaming service xCloud coming to iOS and PC in 2021 says Microsoft

Cloud Gaming with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

Xbox should be streaming onto iOS in the new year (pic: Microsoft)

Microsoft has created a workaround for its video game streaming service on iOS, which may also end up working for Fortnite.

You should soon be able to stream Xbox games straight to your iPhone or iPad, as Microsoft announces that xCloud is returning to iOS next spring.

Although the streaming service is already running on Android it had to be removed from iOS because of Apple’s restrictive rules on microtransactions and running content from within other apps.

It’s never really been clear whether they’re being purposefully awkward or not, but Microsoft has come up with a workaround that involves running xCloud from your Safari browser rather than an app.

The announcement was made in a new Xbox Wire blog post, which, as expected, avoided saying anything about Xbox Series X/S sales figures but revealed that over 1.6 million games have been upgraded via Smart Delivery.

According to Microsoft, over 40% of new Xbox owners became so by buying an Xbox Series S, although it’s not clear whether that’s more or less than they expected.

They also reconfirmed that Psychonauts 2 will be released in 2021, as well as ‘some surprises’ – which may be revealed at The Game Awards on Thursday.

This is also likely to be the way that Fortnite makes it back onto iOS, but while Apple might not have any beef with Microsoft they certainly do with Epic Games, who are currently trying to sue them.

Whether that means Apple will try to block the workaround, perhaps inadvertently blocking Microsoft as well, remains to be seen but hopefully everything will be back to normal next year (and you could say that about a lot of things!).

Have Fun ^_^
